Staff Roles and Responsibilities

The Darling Theatre Company (“we”, “us”, “our”) is committed to providing a professional, supportive, and collaborative environment for all staff, contractors, and creatives. This policy outlines the duties, expectations, and accountability for all personnel engaged by the company.

1. Scope

This policy applies to:

  • Permanent and casual employees

  • Contractors and freelancers

  • Teaching artists, directors, and creatives

  • Volunteers involved in company programs or productions

2. Key Duties and Responsibilities

Staff and contractors are expected to:

  • Perform their roles competently and professionally according to their position description or contract

  • Maintain a safe and inclusive environment for participants, colleagues, and visitors

  • Adhere to all company policies, including Safeguarding, Code of Conduct, Health & Safety, and Privacy

  • Communicate effectively and respectfully with colleagues, participants, and parents/guardians

  • Participate in training, meetings, and professional development as required

3. Supervision and Accountability

  • Staff are accountable to direct managers, the Artistic Director, or relevant department leads

  • Responsibilities include:

    • Following instructions and company procedures

    • Reporting concerns or incidents promptly

    • Maintaining accurate records of program delivery, attendance, and incidents

  • Supervisors provide guidance, feedback, and support to ensure staff meet expectations

4. Child and Youth Responsibilities

For staff and contractors working with minors, additional responsibilities include:

  • Holding a current Working With Children Check

  • Following the Safeguarding Policy and Child Safety Guidelines

  • Maintaining appropriate professional boundaries at all times

  • Ensuring children’s safety, well-being, and inclusion during all sessions and activities

5. Professional Conduct

All staff and contractors are expected to:

  • Model respectful and ethical behaviour in all interactions

  • Refrain from bullying, harassment, discrimination, or misconduct

  • Follow proper conflict resolution and complaint procedures if disputes arise

  • Maintain confidentiality regarding company operations, participant information, and sensitive matters

6. Performance Monitoring and Review

  • Staff performance will be regularly reviewed to ensure standards are met

  • Feedback and development opportunities will be provided to support growth and accountability

  • Serious or repeated breaches of responsibilities may result in formal warnings, suspension, or termination

  • Staff are encouraged to contribute ideas, support colleagues, and foster a positive workplace culture
