Health and Safety Policy
Last updated: 23 Jan 2026
The Darling Theatre Company (“we”, “us”, “our”) is committed to ensuring the health, safety, and well-being of all staff, students, performers, volunteers, and visitors. This policy outlines our approach to safe rehearsal practices, emergency procedures, manual handling, and the safe use of equipment.
By participating in our classes, rehearsals, or productions, you agree to follow the guidance set out in this policy.
1. Safe Rehearsal Practices
We aim to create safe, supportive rehearsal environments by:
Checking rehearsal spaces regularly for hazards, including flooring, lighting, and equipment.
Including warm-ups, cooldowns, and appropriate physical exercises in every session.
Monitoring participants to ensure safe practice at all times.
Recording and reporting any injuries or near-misses immediately.
2. Emergency Procedures
We are prepared for emergencies by:
Clearly marking emergency exits and evacuation routes.
Maintaining fire alarms, extinguishers, and first aid kits.
Briefing staff and participants on emergency procedures at the start of courses or productions.
Providing first aid and contacting emergency services if required.
Investigating all incidents to prevent recurrence.
3. Manual Handling
We minimise risk when moving equipment, props, or sets by:
Training staff and participants in safe lifting techniques.
Encouraging team lifting or the use of mechanical aids for heavy or awkward items.
Asking participants to seek assistance when lifting items beyond their capacity.
4. Equipment Use
We ensure safe use of all equipment by:
Allowing only trained staff or supervised participants to operate technical equipment, including lighting, sound, and stage machinery.
Regularly inspecting costumes, props, and rehearsal materials for safety.
Providing clear instructions on the safe use of all equipment and materials.
5. Responsibilities
Management: Ensures all policies, procedures, and training are in place and regularly reviewed.
Staff and Teachers: Model safe practice, provide clear instructions, and report hazards immediately.
Participants: Follow safety guidance, report hazards, and act responsibly during all classes, rehearsals, and performances.
6. Review
This policy is reviewed regularly to reflect changes in facilities, equipment, or legislation.
The Darling Theatre Company is committed to continuous improvement in health and safety and expects all members to prioritise safe practice at all times.
